Doggy Tales
One of the
best things about running Scallywags is getting to meet our regular
four legged customers and their faithful two legged companions. Our
customers are a bright, witty, intelligent, creative and discerning
lot and we asked some of them to take a break from their busy
schedules (so many smells, so little time) to pose for a photo and
give us an insight into their worlds.
Sparky
Sparky
the Stoneybatter terrier has quite an ear for music. His
owner plays the harp and since joining the household
Sparky has developed a real taste for Irish and
Renaissance music. He even likes to bark in time (well
sort of) to the metronome. Sparky was rescued from the
pound in Carrickmacross where he was lovingly cared for
by Helen Hewett until his new owner snapped him up.
Since then eight month old Sparky has moved to Dublin
and has taken to city living with enthusiasm. He enjoys
long walks in the verdant surroundings of the Phoenix
Park and lazing on the couch when he's not up to
mischief with his toys. |

My name is Bessie or MISS Bessie to those who are
not immediate family or close friends. I am a lady of a
certain age with an impeccable pedigree. Unfortunately,
my papers were lost during one of the skirmishes that
frequently take place in the hills of Glenasmole, so you
will just have to take my word for it. I was brought up
on the best of foods in heavenly surroundings before
moving to Howth. These days I have a less leisurely or
glamorous life - trekking the hills and beaches of Howth
with my less handsome, less mobile, less haughty, well,
let's say it, inferior, cousin Bille (what a vulgar
name). But, hey, it's a life. |
|

I'm Billie. I think I was called after Billie
Holiday that great blues singer. I think that because I
have a very fine voice. I can howl with the best of them
and love to accompany fire engine and police sirens as
well as trilling along with a tune going on in my head
that only I can hear. Apart from that, I am also or
should say was, a powerful athlete. In my heyday - i.e.
before ligament replacement in both back legs - I could
run with the greyhounds. As a McNab collie, running and
chasing are in my blood. I am from the hills of Wicklow
where my family have been sheep dogs for generations.

- food, toys, socks, turf...you name it; chasing cats
and birds
Favourite TV show: How It’s Made
(often useful to know when dismantling
things)

traits: Gives great cuddles, enthusiasm for life
Party piece: Opening doors, particularly likes to
let himself into the living-room at night so he can
sleep on the sofa
Least endearing traits: stealing food, licking
dinner plates, pulling on the lead.. and when let
loose...doing an ‘invisible dog’ impression (the worse
the weather, the longer the disappearance)
Greatest ambition: To climb a mighty oak tree
(currently practicing on a large conifer).

My name is Lizzie and I have the distinction of
being Scallywags’ first official tester in continental Europe. I
live in Germany with my K9 companion Sunny and my best
friend Bärle a very cute kitty cat who likes to snuggle
up to me on the couch. I’m a serene sort of dog who
likes playing chase and doing tricks. My favourite toy
is my indestructible yellow ball. I am also very
accomplished at roll overs. I am known as the gentle
giant in our household and I like to comfort those in
distress by climbing onto their knees. As I’m quite a
big dog this usually takes their mind off their
troubles. I am a firm believer that the home should be a
place of peace and harmony so I am quick to step in and
settle things down when the cats get into a feisty
scrap. |

Bowie
Hobbies: Lounging in front of the fire, swimming, running on the
beach and hanging with his friend Jacko the terrier in the park.
Favourite TV show: Frasier.
Most endearing traits: Affectionate, cheeky and a bit of a comedian.
Party piece: stealing cream crackers with jam off his owner’s plate
when he thinks she’s not looking........
Least endearing traits: Snoring, barking at cars.
Greatest ambition: to master riding a bicycle and enter a
triathlon. |

Fizzie and Becky
have one thing a lot of dogs would kill for - their
own couch.
Fizzie is a bit of thespian and there is high drama - sad
eyes and tragic expressions - when he is imploring his owners to
take him for a walk. Fizzie is torn between a career on the stage
and becoming a world class high jumper. To relax Fizzie likes
playing tug-o-war with his sister Becky with anything to hand -
shoes, socks, duvets. When in the car Fizzie barks at motorbikes,
cyclists, nuns, men in yellow jackets and cats.
Becky loves food, food, food, and can open doors to get what she
wants. It has taken her owners years to "Becky proof” their kitchen.
Her most impressive raid to date while supposedly on house minding
duties was two carrots, four apples, a 6-pack of Tayto, a jar of
peanut butter and a half tube of toothpaste. Becky is very
interested in cooking and particularly enjoys watching Ready Steady,
Cook on TV. This lively pair adore sitting next to a big fire and
being hand fed chips from Beshofs. |

Inca,
the sleek and shiny Doberman, is a very busy dog. She is
front of house manager at Dogsbody Grooming Salon in
Terenure where she runs a tight ship. There is no chance
of anyone sneaking off for a cat nap with Inca in
charge. Inca is a very bright dog and has mind benders
like the Rubik’s Cube licked.
She loves long walks in
the country and gazing at the stars. She is particularly
interested in Sirius (the dog star) and also has an
interest in the movement of the planets, especially
Pluto. Inca is trained to pick up things that fall in
the salon and at home she has the habit of picking up
anything left on the floor. What a tidy dog. Every home
should have one. |
